What Compels Millions of Women to Start Mom Blogs?

Why Are There So Many Mom Blogs - Mom's Got it Made

If you’re a mom with internet access, chances are you’ve come across your fair share of mom blogs. Googling common parenting questions like “how do I get my baby to sleep through the night” typically lands you on somebody’s blog.

There are literally MILLIONS of mom blogs out there, authored by women from all over the world. Today, I am taking on a question you may not have realized you had. Why would anyone want to start a mom blog?

To address this question, I’ve teamed up with some of my favorite bloggers. Together, I’m hoping we can help to clarify what it is about motherhood that turns so many (mostly) sane women into bloggers.

What the Heck am I Doing with a Mom Blog?

In this day and age, starting a mom blog feels a bit like investing in cryptocurrency. There are no guarantees that it’s going to pan out, millions of people beat me to it and if I’m being totally honest, I still don’t fully understand what it is and how it works.

Blogging is pretty out of character for me. I am usually not a fan of putting myself out there. So you’re probably wondering what drives me to share details of my life with strangers on the internet?

Dozens of factors led me to start blogging, but they all boil down to one fact. Becoming a mom changed me to the core.

1. Motherhood Sparks Creativity

Suddenly, I have patience and enthusiasm for tasks I would have rolled my eyes at a few years ago. I get a weird amount of satisfaction from decorating a nursery, designing a kid’s Halloween costume or writing a blog post. The urge to make something is the number one reason I got started with blogging and it’s how Mom’s Got it Made got its name.

2. Motherhood unites . . .

I’ve come to believe that most moms have a lot in common. We are united by the joy, love and wonder we get to share with our little ones. At the same time, we grapple with feelings of guilt, anxiety and fear for our children’s futures and the role we play in defining them.

3.  . . . But it also divides

When it comes to parenting, there are a lot of “right” approaches. You may not have real-life friends who support and understand your parenting style. But I’d bet you this blog you can find a like-minded parent on the internet.

4. Moms READ mom blogs

My primary focus is parenting, but I also write about crafting and blogging. Although parenting posts only make up 60% of the content on this blog, they attract 98% of the pageviews. Using this blog as a tool to engage and support parents is my absolute favorite part of blogging.

5. Kids are So Adorably Entertaining

My one-year-old son loves the way he looks in hats. He growls when he’s really excited, waves at every living thing that crosses his path and loses his mind when he sees bubbles. I am unapologetically obsessed with him. Not surprisingly, I have a great time documenting his quirks.

6. Being a Mom Can be Oddly Isolating

You’d think people who eat most of their meals with another human on their lap would never be lonely. But the truth is, becoming a parent can be very isolating. These days, I spend a lot of nights at home with a baby monitor. My eagerness to make some mom friends and relate to other parents was a big part of my motivation to start blogging.

Don’t Just Take My Word for It

One unexpected and welcome side-effect of having a mom blog has been getting to know other bloggers. Over the last few months, I’ve “met” and collaborated with an awesome group of entertaining and supportive women.

To articulate why the internet is overflowing with mom blogs, I asked six of my favorite bloggers to share why they got started. Check out their insightful and eclectic responses.

April, Mojitos & Munchkins

From an early age, I have always loved using writing as a creative outlet. After losing my mom as a young momma myself, I felt like I had so much to say but no one here to share my words with. Hence, Mojitos and Munchkins was conceived. My writing is eclectic and completely dependent on my mood. I swing from the depths of despair in my writing on grief, to the tumultuous reality of #momlife. No matter my mood or my writing topic, I can always promise raw feelings and the absolute truth. I love connecting with my readers and hearing about their journey, whether they are a fellow writer or an avid reader of blogs.

Megan, Misadventures with Megan

Life with kids is a crazy & fantastic adventure! But it also includes many hilarious (and sometimes nerve-wracking!) epic fails. Hopefully, I can make you laugh or inspire you to get out and have adventures of your own – even if they fail spectacularly!

Julie, Fab Working Mom Life

I have been “blogging” and have been building websites for a while, since my college days! But it wasn’t until I embarked on the motherhood journey did my blog regain a purpose. I rebranded to a working mom blog because at that moment I found myself struggling with that title. Having a baby changes everything, and I was having a hard time making sense of everything. Through blogging, I have found support and connection with others in similar situations, and when we moms get together and help each other, we can truly make a difference.

Ashley, Oh Yellow

Starting a blog was a secret dream of mine, but I never thought I had anything of value for the world to read. When my family needed some extra income, I decided to finally go for it! Starting out has been so challenging, but sooo rewarding. I love sharing about the struggles of new moms and encouraging them with my story. And the best part is…it’s really, really fun.

Kristen, The Love Notes Blog

I started blogging as a creative outlet. I was a preschool teacher at the time, & I loved sharing fun ideas & activities we did in the classroom. I intended for blogging to just be a hobby, but then it grew to be something more than I imagined when I became a mom. I found myself searching the internet for all things motherhood & realized if I’m searching, someone else is too! So I started sharing more personal things— stories, encouragement, & the “I’ve been there, you aren’t alone” posts. Through that, I’ve connected with lots of moms over the years & I love the sense of community my blog brings me. Not only that, but I absolutely love documenting life— my feelings, my growing children, sweet memories of my family & all the struggles along the way. Because motherhood deserves to be written.

Kayla, Parenting Expert to Mom

Although I love being a SAHM there was a part of me that missed my job of interacting with parents and professionals as a birth–3 Early Interventionist. I started Parenting Expert to Mom to fill that part of my life that was missing. I am coming up on a year of blogging and it was one of the best decisions I have made although it was scary at the time. It has restored some much needed balance in my life!

  1. Great post! Bit late to the game but hey-ho! I started a blog as an extension of my journal recovering from severe postpartum mental illness. I wondered if using the space to help other mums might be worthwhile. Plus I’ve always loved writing! Not sure quite how to ‘meet’ other bloggers?! 🧡

    1. Thank you! That’s an awesome mission. Most other bloggers I’ve met by collaborating. Good luck with the blog!
