Scrabble Coasters
I recently made these scrabble coasters for a friend for Christmas. These coasters are an extremely easy and customizable gift for any occasion. More importantly, they are really hard to screw up and anyone who can spell can make them. The most challenging part is trying to come up with phrases that are approximately the right length to fit on a coaster.
Cost: about $10 for 4
Time: 20 Minutes plus time for the glue and coating to dry

Step 1: Pick Your Phrases
This time I stuck to wine and happy hour themed phrases which would work for anyone who enjoys the occasional cocktail. One of the advantages of this craft is that you can customize it to say whatever you want. Here are a few more ideas:
- Holiday greetings MERRY – XMAS – HAPPY – NEW – YEAR
- Movie quotes YOU – DONT – SMELL – LIKE – SANTA
- Song lyrics ALL I – WANT – FOR – XMAS – IS YOU
- Inside jokes
- Personal notes (thank yous, congratulations, apologies, etc.)
I also think these would make an adorable gift for a teacher. You could use something like WE – LOVE – YOU – [ TEACHER NAME] or THANK – YOU – [TEACHER NAME].
Once you’ve selected the phrases you want to use, lay out the tiles to make sure you have the letters you need. I ended up rearranging some of mine because I ran out of Ws.
Step 2: Glue the Scrabble Tiles to the Cork Sheets
To glue the tiles to the cork sheet I just coated the sheet with E6000 and started sticking the tiles on. For blank tiles between words, I simply selected letters that I had a surplus of (I’m lookin’ at you – O) and flipped them over.
Once I was done I had one sheet of six tile coasters. At this point, I let everything dry overnight before I started cutting.
Step 3: Cut Out the Scrabble Coasters
After the glue dried I just grabbed some scissors and started cutting. I tried to get as close to the edge of the tiles as possible. To quote Forrest Gump, “that’s all I have to say about that”.
Step 4: Spray the Scrabble Coasters with Acrylic Coating
Once the coasters are assembled, spray them with acrylic coating. This will help protect them from condensation. I shook the can first and held it about a foot above the coasters while spraying.
Step 5: Enjoy some Red-Wine Sangria!
Once your scrabble coasters have dried, reward yourself with a glass of sangria.
Red Wine Sangria
- 1 bottle red wine
- 1 cup club soda
- Whatever fruit you have. I’m a fan of citrus fruits and berries.
- (Optional – I usually skip) Brandy
- (Optional – I usually skip) Juice or lemonade
I recently came across this great DIY sangria gift idea which would make an awesome hostess gift alongside these scrabble coasters.
If you made your own scrabble coasters, leave a comment and let me know how it went! Were they as foolproof as I promised? What phrases did you go with?
